Mupen64Plus (N64)

Mupen64Plus is an open-source, plugin-based Nintendo 64 emulator that is both a fork and a direct upgrade to the now-abandoned Mupen64 by Hacktarux. This cross-platform emulator is capable of accurate emulation with dynamic recompilers for 32-bit x86 and 64-bit amd64 systems. It also provides the necessary plugins for better overall performance and experience.

Emulator Features

M64Plus provides many other features including speed adjustment with smooth sound output, a shared library interface for integration into other systems, a command-line Front-end application, and an overclock feature for an even faster frame rate. It also supports the following:

• Hi-resolution texture with its two OpenGL video plugins
• LIRC Infrared remote control
• Rumble Pak
• GameShark Codes, along with its built-in Cheat system

History

August 26, 2005, was the last version of the original Mupen64 emulator, and several developers tried to pick up where it left off. By October 2007, Richard Godeken released Mupen64-64bit, or what is now known as Mupen64Plus. The fork aimed to provide a 64-bit recompiler while trying to fix the bugs present in the original emulator. Over the course of time and with the help of other developers, Mupen64+ expanded and grew to become one of the leading Nintendo 64 emulators we know today.

Popular Forks and Ports

Both the ports, Mupen64plus FZ and AE allow the emulator to run on Android systems - the former being more up-to-date. M64Plus also has ports for DragonBox Pyra and Pandora. There are also heavily-modified forks such as Mupen64Plus-Next and ParaLLEl-N64. These forks provide many features and optimizations not present in the mainline emulator.
