Originally known as Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator, MAME is an open-source multi-platform and multi-system emulator written entirely in C++. This project is created to provide working emulation of various machines with the software's ability to play console games as being its "side effect". As time passed, MAME became incredibly large and allowed support for thousands of machines and ROM sets. Although initially used to emulate classic arcade video games (like Pacman), MAME is now used to preserve decades of software history including the documentation of a wide variety of vintage computers, video game consoles, and even calculators. 

This project features a retro-style interface that may not be for everyone's liking. Fortunately, there are many alternative frontends available including some that make the project look and feel modern.
